Clinic Eye Training Center, ophthalmological training of excellence

Did you know that 80% of vision impairment can be prevented or cured? Did you know that 50% of the world’s blindness can be reversed with surgery? In order to treat the people with eye diseases, the training of highly qualified visual health professionals is essential. From that need was born the Clínic Eye Training Center (CETC), the first training and practical training center in Ophthalmology in a public center in Europe and which is part of the initiative of a university hospital such as the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.

A new concept of teaching in ophthalmology

The CETC introduces a new teaching concept, closely linking the training space with the actual clinical activity and practice that is carried out daily in the hospital. This is possible thanks to the fact that the classroom and the laboratories (which include an experimental and simulation eye surgery area) are close to the operating rooms and have a direct digital connection with the outpatient area of the Clinical Institute of Ophthalmology (ICOF).

Born in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, the CETC it is also a commitment to a hybrid teaching model that combines face-to-face in the classroom with virtuality through online presentations. Quality content and audiovisual technology that allows interaction and global connection with students and specialists from around the world.

State-of-the-art facilities and technology with internationally renowned professionals

The CETC facilities are made up of a training room and two laboratories. The first, known as Dry Lab, is a simulation laboratory that makes it possible to present the different surgical and diagnostic platforms, where students acquire basic and surgical skills. The second is the Wet Lab, an experimental surgery space where training is provided on cataract surgery, retina, cornea, glaucoma and oculoplastic surgery.

500 specialists a year are expected to be trained in this space, including undergraduate Medicine and Bioengineering students, MIR doctors and ophthalmologists. “Our goal is to provide comprehensive training in Ophthalmology. We were born with a clear vocation for training in different activities, both surgical and non-surgical”, explains Dr. Alfredo Adán, director of theClinical Institute of Ophthalmology (ICOF) and visiõnclínic+.

These facilities are located next to the new ICOF surgical area, that includes four operating rooms that allow for up to 30 interventions a day, which allows students, in addition to carrying out their practices, to see live ophthalmological operations. There is also intercommunication with external consultations, where more than 200 visits are made every day.

For its construction, the FEDER Fund has been financed through the MOOMA project (Marc Ophthalmological Organizational Model).
