THE VALUE OF GÕOD EYESIGHT
CATARACTS
Cataracts are caused by an increase in the opacity of the lens of the eye. As the initially transparent lens ages, it increases in thickness and weight, losing its flexibility, becoming cloudy, and resulting in a progressive loss of vision. There are different types of cataracts, depending on their location. Each will require a specific approach to development and treatment.
At visiõnclínic+ we offer the full range of treatment options for cataracts. With our new lasers we can offer the latest laser surgical techniques. In addition, we have the latest and best intraocular lenses on the market.

FIRST VISIT AND EYE EXAMINATION
For the diagnosis of cataracts, we need to carry out a complete eye examinationto discover the type of cataracts and determine what type of treatmentis best for your case. Request an appointment without obligationYou will be attended by one of our experts, who will follow your case and accompany you from the diagnosis until after the surgery.
WHY CHOOSE VISIÕNCLÍNIC+ TO TREAT CATARACTS?
DISTINGUISHED EXPERIENCE
Our professionals are part of the Clinical Institute of Ophthalmology (ICOF) of Barcelona’s Hospital Clínic, pioneers in the care and study of patients with cataracts. Nearly 2,600 cataract surgeries are performed here each year.Dr. Xavier Corretger and Dr. Meilin Chang deal with cases of complex, traumatic cataracts or in patients with uveitis, up to subluxation of the lens, the implant or replacement of intraocular lenses and the reconstruction of the anterior segment of the eye.
LEADING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY
The new visiõnclínic+ surgical area is equipped with the latest advances in cataract surgery: Zeiss® Artevo® microscopes, Victus B&L® femtolaser and Excímer® TENEO™ 2 Laser. Theintraocular lenses we implant are produced by the most recognised commercial brands: Bausch & Lomb®, Johnson & Johnson®, Alcon®, Zeiss®, PhysIOL®, STAAR®, among others, allowing us to offer patients the full range of state-of-the-art optical corrections available.
MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM
At visiõnclínic+ we have a team made up of ophthalmologists from Barcelona’s Hospital Clínic and barnaclínic+, specialists in cataract surgery and all other areas of ophthalmology. In addition, we work with a team of highly qualified optometrists, meaning we can offer patients a comprehensive range of services in support of your visual health. Finally, being part of the Hospital Clínic Group gives us direct access to professionals in specific areas of care who may be involved in the treatment.
LEADERS IN RESEARCH
Belonging to the Barcelona Hospital Clínic Group allows our team members to participate in the research activity of the Area of Biological Aggression and Response Mechanisms of the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS). It also means we belong to the ICHOM (International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement) Cataracts project, an international registry of quality standards in cataract surgery patients. As part of the “Ocular inflammation: clinical and experimental studies” group, we are currently working on two ongoing projects: calculation result of intraocular lenses with state-of-the-art formulas, and long-term results of intraocular lens-stabilising implants after traumatic cataract surgeries. Thanks to atranslational research model, we will be able to translate this scientific knowledge into tangible results for the patient.
TREATMENTS BASED ON SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE
All the treatments we offer at visiõnclínic+ and, in this case, the different cataract surgeryoptions, are based on published scientific evidence. The health of our patients comes first and, for this reason and to ensure their safety, we base our care on published scientific evidence that is constantly updated.
CATARACT DIAGNOSIS
For the diagnosis of cataracts a first visit and a complete eye examination must be performed, during which:
· We measure the distant and near visual acuity of each eye separately.
· We perform an eye examination with a slit lamp.
· We analyse condition of the retina and the cornea , to make sure that the loss of vision is caused by the presence of cataracts.
· We perform an eye biometry to calculate the power of the intraocular lens and consult the lifestyle and particular preferences of each patient. This way we can define the prosthesis to be implanted in the most comprehensive and personalised way possible.

TYPES OF CATARACTS
NUCLEAR CATARACTS
Nuclear cataracts are those in which the opacity is located in the central part of the lens and interferes with the entrance of light, producing a blurred vision especially in the distance. Opacity can indicate the degree of rigidity and hardness of the lens. In advanced nuclear cataracts, the lens may become brown and completely opaque. The evolution of nuclear cataracts is usually slow and mainly affects distant vision.
CORTICAL CATARACTS
Cortical cataracts develop in the most eccentric part of the lens, the cortex. This type of cataract appears when, due to changes in the composition of the water in the lens fibres, fissures are created from the outside towards the centre, in the shape of bicycle wheel spokes. Cortical cataracts affect vision in a very idiosyncratic way. Patients who suffer from them notice glare from the passage and dispersion of light through these “rays”.
POSTERIOR SUBCAPSULAR CATARACTS
Subcapsular cataracts are so called because they form under the membrane that contains the lens, known as the capsule. At first they appear as a small opacity at the back of the lens. Their progression is faster than other types of cataracts. In cases of posterior subcapsular cataracts near vision is usually altered and glare and decreased vision in bright environments occur.

TREATMENT OF CATARACTS
CATARACT SURGERY
The best technique for cataract surgery that exists today is phacoemulsification with a foldable intraocular lens implant. This technique consists in the fragmentation of the cataract through a microscopic incision in the cornea, its subsequent aspiration and the implantation of an artificial intraocular lens through the same incision.
INTRAOCULAR LENSES FOR CATARACTS
L Cataracts originate from the loss of transparency of the lens. To solve them, it is necessary to remove the part of the lens that does not allow light to pass through and replace it with a transparent intraocular lens (IOL), which allows light to pass through and helps focus images on the retina.
